Operation Vijay – 1971

Operation Vijay – 1971, was against the infiltrating Pakistani troops towards the western border of the country. This war between India and Pakistan was a defining historic moment as it marks the end of  genocide of the people of East Pakistan finally resulting into the liberation of a new nation in subcontinent – Bangladesh.

On December 3, 1971, The Pakistani Air Force launched a sudden pre-emptive air strike against eleven airfields in northwest India, marking the declaration of war. In retaliation, Indian Air Force launched an initial air strike and set forth a massive attack using blitzkrieg tactics. The conflict lasted for thirteen days, during which the Indian forces pulled off a sizable air, sea, and land assault resulting in high losses and casualties of Pakistani forces.

On December 16, 1971, The chief of the Pakistani Forces along with 93,000 Pakistani troops, surrendered to the joint forces of the Indian Army and Bangladesh’s Mukti Bahini. It was the biggest ever military surrender after the World War II.

This war not only showed the valour of our Defence forces but also coordinated efforts of our three forces at the same time. The intrepidity of Indian forces, their exemplary skills and absolute commitment towards the motherland brought this historic triumph.
